From $5 billion to farmers market, superlative firms transforming their industries

While the biggest investment houses in the world crashed in 2008, Progress Investment Management Co. instead sought to  be “the brand of the future — to continue to redefine the field of competition in the 21st century.”

Under President Thurman White, Progress became 100 percent employee-owned and launched a new Emerging Manager Research Award with the Journal of Investment.

On Wednesday, Aug. 26, Progress is being honored as one of San Francisco’s superlative black businesses during the Founders Reception for the sixth annual National Black Business Month at Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles, 1521 Eddy St.

On Wednesday, superlative firms in the city’s major industries are being recognized by the founders and the San Francisco African-American Chamber in fields such as finance, technology, airport concessions, franchises, retail, personal care and tourism.  California Public Utilities Commissioner Timothy Simon, one of the 50 Most Important African-Americans in Technology, will emcee the reception.  There will be a book signing for Templeton’s latest report, Walls Come Tumbling Down: State of Black Business, sixth edition.

DIGITAL SOUVENIR BOOKLET

Thanks to the pace of preregistration, we will close the ticketing process 48 hours before the Founders Reception on Wednesday, Aug. 26.  That means the networking will be enhanced because everyone will have a name badge.  We'll also be able to avoid the feeling of not having enough hands to juggle a booklet and an plate and fork by transmitting the highly valuable souvenir booklet to each registrant electronically.  Not only will it include the profiles of the superlative businesses we're featuring but also the updated roster of San Francisco's black-owned restaurants and dynamic links to their webpages to be a resource all year round.  National Black Business Month is an opportunity to move into the future.  Join us for this seminal event.
